The Pugalope prefer dry desert and plains habitats. They have been reported at various times in some forested areas. It's not entirely clear if this is the same species or an offshoot of the desert roaming variety. There's a story that Daniel Boone came across one on a trek to Missouri in 1799. Boone thinking it was a small deer raised his rifle to fire. Upon realizing it was a cute Pugalope he didn't have the heart to shoot. As the story goes the Pugalope was so thankful he followed Boone until he arrived at his destination warning him of danger along the way. Seeing one is considered good luck so if it ever crosses your path consider going out and buying a lottery ticket.
